Building your own Flagstone Patio is not a difficult process. If you follow some tried-and-true steps, your Patio will be completed and ready to enjoy in no time at all.
After you have chosen and acquired the materials you need, the first step in building your Flagstone Patio is to dig a foundation. Be sure that you have measured the area that you need correctly. If you outline the area with a shovel, you will know exactly where you need to dig. Loosening the dirt with the shovel will make it easier to dig, and also less exertion for you.
When you remove the dirt from the ditch, make sure that the surface is as smooth and even as possible. This will help the stones to lay flat, and be free of any unnecessary imperfections. Most people find it easier to place all of the gravel in the ditch, rather than attempting to take it in a little at a time. Next, you should press the gravel tightly into the dirt. A tamper is a good tool for this process.
The next part of the process is adding sand. When you have plenty of sand on top of the gravel, rake over it with a garden rake to make it even and smooth. After you have done this, it is time to add the Flagstone. It is important to take your time in arranging the stones, to be sure that they are positioned evenly and arranged the way you want. When you are satisfied with the appearance of the Flagstone, press them into the bed of sand.
After you have completed this step, adding extra sand to fill the spaces between the stones is the next step. When there is a sufficient amount of sand, wetting it with a garden hose will cause the sand to set and hold the Flagstone in place. You may need to repeat this part of the process a couple of times in order to ensure that enough sand remains.
While this is an easy way to build a basic Flagstone Patio, you can also substitute cement instead of the sand, vary the colors of Flagstone you use, or use pre-cut Flagstone for an entirely different appearance. No matter what you prefer, your new Flagstone Patio will look outstanding.
